On the planet Kelanni, life is cheap.
With the aid of the fearsome "Keltar" enforcers in their flying cloaks, a ruthless invader is forcing the native population to mine the colloquially named "lodestone" - a substance from another universe with infinitely destructive power.
The only ones who can stop him are a tiny girl with a fiery disposition, a former Keltar, a failed revolutionary, a musician and the mysterious creature Boxx, who seems to speak only in riddles...
Pursued by Keltar, the party will encounter bizarre creatures, ancient technologies and terrifying dangers. Finally, they must seek to cross a massive storm barrier in order to reach the other side of their world, where a world-shaking revelation awaits.
The Sea of Storms SciFi Adventure Lodestone Book 1 eBook Mark Whiteway
The story was good and moved quickly in a slow sort of a way. The characters are of a different world, but completely human - but with tails, olive skin and white blood. Otherwise, all descriptions of them are totally human. The alien world has emeralds and diamonds - described in the human way. The males are strong, smart and in charge; the females are typically weak and submissive. There is very little alien about the descriptions. That aside, the story was good. Rather well thought out and mostly logical in character actions. The only real alien character (Boxx) is somewhat of an enigma. Boxx is intriguing because we know so little about it, but he is the most knowedgeable of them all being an ancient, native being. The other characters are four human-type aliens brought together by unusual circumstances.
Besides the ancient being, Boxx, the four rather characters embark on a world-saving journey from an evil "Prophet" who is believed to be non-native - yet has control over the world. Unfortunately, the journey presented in this book is only one first step. The characters have a destination presented and a way to arrive at that destination, which is destroyed by the prophet's dedicated followers. They are able to escape and find a way through the treacherous seas, but only two of the five members arrives - and then the story ends. No one knows what they are suppose to be doing after crossing the storm.
If the book had an actual ending, I would consider the next installment. But I hate that authors give the first incomplete volume for free and then charge for the rest. If it were a complete standalone book, I would not be offended - but it is not. While 4 stars would be an appropriate rating, I am giving it 3 - which I think is high for an unfinished story.
The book was well written with some grammatical errors beginning to occur at about 75%. Most were minor and easily overlooked, but obvious because the editing was pretty darned good.

The Sea of Storms SciFi Adventure Lodestone Book 1 eBook Mark Whiteway Reviews
It seems almost silly to add yet another sterling review to this introductory novel in the Lodestone series. However, sometimes a book is just so overwhelmingly deserving of the time and attention that it just can't be helped.
"The Sea of Storms" is an epic science-fiction adventure that reads more like a fantasy novel with a mysterious ore known as lodestone at its core. On the planet Kelanni a young girl named Shann on a whim helps an outlaw during his battle with the overbearing Keltar soldiers who keep their thumbs on the local population as surely and cruelly as some of Earth's most despotic regimes. With the guards searching for her, Shann is forced to flee the city of her birth and finds herself joining the rebels Lyall and Alondo in a mission to save a camp filled with "tribute" slaves, who have been collected from villages and cities all over Kelanni, much the way her parents had been taken many years before. At first, it looks as though Shann and her friends' rescue attempt might actually succeed...but then a female Keltar soldier named Keris and a shelled creature by the name of Boxx reveal that the slave camp is ready for their rebellion. They are doomed to fail. Having no choice, the companions listen and learn that slaves are just the beginning of the evil that eats at their civilization. Only by joining with these two strange intruders can Shann and her friends avert the destruction of their entire species.
In the tradition of Larry Niven, Ben Bova and JRR Tolkien, Mark Whiteway has created a huge, series-worthy plot that carries his readers breathlessly toward a conclusion that is satisfying...but not quite complete. For that epic conclusion, we all gladly move on to Book Two.
A wonderful novel. I give it my highest recommendation.
This was a book that I kept picking up and putting down. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it in the beginning. It had some interesting thoughts there in the beginning, but I wasn’t sold at first. I kept giving it a go, because I do not like failing to finish a book.
I am very glad that I did not. It really picked up. After the introduction of the primary cast, I felt myself growing attached to the primary characters and wanting to see where they ended up. The growth of the characters and how they influenced each other was what kept me interested. I especially like the interplay between Shann and Lyall and Keris and Shann. That was where the story was for me.
Sure, the mechanics of the lodestones were neat and had some interesting moments, and the religious backdrop was cool, but the characters in relation to those ideas are where the power of this book is at. It means nothing if we weren’t following these characters through their special quest.
I’m not sure if I was that intrigued in the story to keep going with the story. There were some pacing issues and at times I felt a little bit unclear on some context of what was going on, so the scope of the story felt a little bit vague to me. I would expect that to be cleared up with more reading and further installments, but I’m not sure if I really want to. It was fun and engaging yes, but I’m hesitant for reasons I can’t fully articulate. It was good, but not fantastic. I do recommend it, though; is a nice sci-fi adventure.
